Paneer

95/250gm

Known As: Paneer; Indian Cottage Cheese.

Appearance: Paneer is a fresh, unaged cheese made from cow or buffalo milk. It has a white to off-white color and is usually sold in blocks or cubes. The cheese has a firm, smooth texture, and holds its shape well, making it ideal for various cooking methods. Paneer can also be crumbled or grated, depending on the dish.

Texture: Paneer has a dense, slightly crumbly texture that becomes soft and creamy when cooked. Unlike most cheeses, it does not melt, which makes it perfect for frying, grilling, or adding to curries and sauces. The texture is firm enough to be cut into shapes, yet tender when bitten into, offering a satisfying chew.

Flavor: Paneer has a mild, milky flavor with a slight sweetness. It is relatively neutral in taste, allowing it to absorb the flavors of the spices and sauces it is cooked with. This versatility makes it a popular ingredient in both savory and sweet dishes.

Nutritional Content: Paneer is a good source of protein, especially for vegetarians. It is also rich in calcium, which is essential for bone health. Paneer contains a moderate amount of fat, primarily saturated fat, but it is low in carbohydrates. It also provides vitamins like B12 and riboflavin, as well as phosphorus and selenium.

Culinary Uses: Paneer is a staple in Indian cuisine and is used in a variety of dishes. It is commonly added to curries such as Paneer Butter Masala, Palak Paneer (spinach with paneer), and Shahi Paneer. Paneer can also be grilled or fried and served as an appetizer or snack, such as in Paneer Tikka. In addition, it is used in sweet dishes like Rasgulla and Sandesh. Paneer can be crumbled and added to salads or stuffed into parathas (Indian flatbreads) for a protein-rich meal.

Preparation: Paneer is made by curdling heated milk with an acidic agent like lemon juice, vinegar, or yogurt. The curds are then drained, and the resulting cheese is pressed to remove excess whey, forming a solid block. Homemade paneer can be customized in texture by varying the pressing time—longer pressing results in firmer paneer.

Storage: Fresh paneer should be stored in the refrigerator and consumed within a few days. To keep it fresh longer, it can be soaked in water and stored in an airtight container. Paneer can also be frozen for longer storage, although freezing may slightly alter its texture. When ready to use, it can be thawed and used as desired.
